1908 Courthouse

Nestled at the crossroads of highways US21 and US58 in the heart of Independence, the Historic 1908 Courthouse stands as a beacon of cultural significance in Grayson County, Virginia. Acquired and lovingly maintained by the Historic 1908 Courthouse Foundation since 1986, this architectural gem serves a dual role as an art and cultural center. The Foundation, a dedicated non-profit organization, tirelessly works towards preserving this historic structure, ensuring it remains a vital hub for the people of Grayson County and its neighboring areas.

As the county seat, Independence has witnessed the evolution of not just one, but two courthouses on this very site, with the 1908 Courthouse being the third in the county’s history. Following meticulous restoration efforts, this landmark now hosts a myriad of cultural treasures within its walls. From the Crossroads Museum to the Baldwin Auditorium, the Tourist Information Center, and the Grayson County Historical Society, each space tells a story of the region’s rich heritage. Moreover, it accommodates the offices of the Tourism Department, the Courthouse Foundation, a seasonal outpost for the Blue Ridge Music Center, and a haven for private businesses. The Historic 1908 Courthouse stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit that breathes life into cultural preservation.
