Pictures like this are fairly common. A simple picture of a train moving along the tracks – nothing overwhelming or special. That is until you try to take one with a wide-angle lens (Sigma 10-20mm) and you learn a few things. 1) The train is moving fast. 2) Dirt, dust, rocks are coming off the track at a high rate of speed. 3) You were not ready for 1 or 2. In other words – you may not want to attempt this because it does put you and your equipment at some risk.
Here are the two images I happened to catch when fortunately we were in the right place at the right time, with the camera and in a location where I could take the shot. It isn’t something I would recommend – at least not the way I did it but I am pleased with how the images turned out. If I were going to shoot this again I would probably use a lens with more zoom and get lower to the ground to get more of an upward angle on the shot. I didn’t have time for a lot of planning when the train signal starting flashing I jumped out of the car.
