Happy Birthday, Godzilla!

Godzilla (Gojira) was ‘born’ on November 3, 1954, with the release of Ishiro Honda’s classic movie. Whether you see the kaiju as a metaphor for nuclear weapons or the sleeping giant of the United States the monster is a pop-culture icon that transcends mediums and generations. A very special cake and candles to the pride of Japan.

Want to celebrate? Check out the World Premiere of the 4K Restoration of the original Gojira presented in Japanese with English subtitles at Alamo Drafthouse on November 9th & 10th.

Godzilla is the roaring granddaddy of all monster movies. It’s also a remarkably humane and melancholy drama, made in Japan at a time when the country was reeling from nuclear attack and H-bomb testing in the Pacific. Its rampaging radioactive beast, the poignant embodiment of an entire population’s fears, became a beloved international icon of destruction, spawning almost thirty sequels.
