If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the bustling beach scene in Myrtle Beach, Brookgreen Gardens in Georgetown County, South Carolina, is the perfect getaway. Nestled just a short drive from the ocean, this 9,100-acre garden offers an enchanting blend of art, nature, and history, making it a great spot to spend a day (or more!) at a different pace.
We recently visited Brookgreen Gardens on an overcast day, which turned out to be ideal for exploring the outdoor sculptures and zoo. Brookgreen is perhaps most famous for its extensive collection of American figurative sculpture—it’s one of the largest and most impressive in the country. Wandering through the gardens, we were constantly amazed by the breathtaking sculptures nestled among lush greenery and winding paths. Each sculpture seemed to have its own story, and the overcast sky provided a lovely backdrop that emphasized their details in a different light.
The zoo was another highlight of our visit. Brookgreen Gardens’ zoo focuses on native wildlife, and it gave us the chance to see animals like river otters, foxes, and birds of prey up close. The zoo’s design felt well integrated into the surrounding environment, almost as if it were an extension of the gardens themselves. It’s the kind of place where you feel more connected to nature, learning about the wildlife that calls South Carolina home.
One of the things that struck us most was how much there was to do—more than we could possibly fit into one day. Aside from the sculptures and zoo, Brookgreen offers historical tours, nature trails, and boat excursions through the nearby rivers. The gardens are also dotted with peaceful spots perfect for simply relaxing and soaking in the beauty of your surroundings. We left feeling like we had only scratched the surface and promised ourselves that next time we’re in the area, we’ll be back to experience even more.
If you’re visiting the Myrtle Beach area, Brookgreen Gardens is an absolute must for a change of pace—a day filled with art, wildlife, and tranquility. Whether it’s an overcast day that calls for exploring or a sunny one perfect for a boat tour, there’s always something to discover here. Make sure to set aside enough time, because once you’re in Brookgreen, you’ll find there’s always another garden, another sculpture, or another path that draws you in.
