The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park is located in downtown Wilson, NC. It is 2-acres and features 30 whirligigs. There are benches and a big lawn where you can spread a blanket out and enjoy a picnic. The park is open from 5 a.m. to 12 a.m. and it is free.
The park is named for Vollis Simpson who was a farm machinery repairman. He made the sculptures on his family farm. Vollis died in May of 2013 at the age of 94.
In 2010 the town of Wilson announced a plan to move the whirligigs and create the Whirligig Park in downtown Wilson. Now people can come and enjoy the whirligigs that stand over 50 feet tall.
