We love Stone Brewery. We visited their California locations last year when we traveled to San Diego. We finally got around to checking out their location closest to us in Richmond, Virginia. It is an easy day trip from Raleigh. It took us about two and a half hours to get there.
They have a beautiful space in downtown Richmond. It looks very similar to the Escondido location. They do not have a restaurant, which is sort of sad because that is one of the best parts about the location in California. I had the best fried olives there. So good! Anywhoo…. enough about California.
They are brewing a lot more beer now out of Richmond which is exciting. We got to try a few. Here is what we sampled:
- Notorious P.O.G. Berliner Weisse – 4.7%
- Wazzle Barrel-Aged Sour – 9.2%
- Barrel-Aged Imperial Saison with Peaches – 10.3%
- Drew Curtis / Wil Wheaton / Greg Koch Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout (2019) – 11.5%
- Scorpion Bowl IPA – 7.5%
My favorite was the Notorious P.O.G. It played right to my palate. This was originally brewed in the Liberty Station brewhouse as a collaboration with actor Jonah Ray. He grew up drinking in Hawaii so this beer has strong passion fruit, orange and guava juice flavors. It is the perfect beer for a hot summer Virginia day.
If you are looking for something fun to do on the weekend then head to Stone in Richmond, it won’t disappoint.
Pro-tip: Make sure to bring a cooler with you. You can buy beer and growlers there and they have some special beers normally that you can’t find at home.
