Balboa Park is a crown jewel of San Diego. It has 16 museums and is absolutely stunning. The park was established in 1868 and 2018 marks its 150th anniversary. The park is currently about 1200 acres.
Just after the turn of the century a master plan was created for the park and in 1905 there was a City tax levied so they could build roads and begin development of the park.
In 1915 the Panama-California Exposition was scheduled to be held at the park. They decided to name the park after Vasco Nuñez de Balboa, the first European to spot the Pacific Ocean while on exploration in Panama.
