Myrtle Beach State Park

Myrtle Beach has plenty of big, loud, bright things to do — and we enjoyed some of those too — but one of our favorite stops was a quieter one: Myrtle Beach State Park.

We visited during our trip and had a great time slowing down a little. The park gives you a different version of Myrtle Beach: trees, trails, ocean access, a visitor center, and the kind of space where you can step away from the busier parts of town without really leaving town at all.

One of the highlights for us was taking a crabbing class. It was fun, hands-on, and exactly the kind of vacation activity that works well with kids because it feels like learning and exploring at the same time. Our big catch was not exactly dinner-sized — the only crab we caught was tiny and hiding in a piece of driftwood — but that honestly made it even more memorable.

During the class, we also saw a baby shark that a fisherman caught, which immediately became one of those “wait, did that just happen?” vacation moments. Add in all the wildlife we saw around the park, and the whole visit felt like a little nature adventure tucked into the middle of a Myrtle Beach trip.

We also stopped by the visitor center, which is always a good move at a state park. It helped give the visit some context and made the park feel like more than just a beach access point. Myrtle Beach State Park has that nice mix of easy, educational, and outdoorsy without requiring a huge time commitment.

For families, it is a great break from the restaurants, shops, mini golf, and bigger attractions. You can walk, explore, learn something, visit the beach, and let the day feel a little less scheduled.

We were really glad we made time for it. Myrtle Beach State Park is a great stop on a Myrtle Beach trip — especially if you want nature, wildlife, a little learning, and a calmer pace. We would absolutely recommend it.
