Located in the heart of Raleigh on Union Square, the North Carolina State Capitol is a living piece of history. Once the center of state government, the Capitol served as the home for all three branches until 1888. That year, the Supreme Court and State Library moved into a separate building, and in 1963, the General Assembly relocated to the State Legislative Building.
Today, the Capitol still plays an active role in North Carolina’s government. The Governor and immediate staff maintain offices on the first floor, continuing a legacy that dates back nearly two centuries.
The current Capitol was built after a fire destroyed the original State House in 1831. Since then, it has stood as a symbol of North Carolina’s political and architectural heritage.
Visitors are encouraged to experience the history firsthand. Self-guided tours are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For those interested in a deeper look, free guided tours are offered on Saturdays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. No reservations are needed, but tours are first come, first served.
