On a rare trip North of Downtown Raleigh, we found a really cool Caribbean-themed restaurant – Tropical Picken Chicken. The colorful decor and equally vibrant menu had some of what you may think of as island food like jerk chicken and some slightly less known items like mofongo.
The menu rounds itself out with a variety of arepas, tacos, and empanadas. We tried a couple of lunch specials (1/4 jerk chicken & taco plate) and it was outstanding with a spicy but not overly hot seasoning. The plantains were a great side and a nice sweet compliment to the other flavors.
We’ll definitely head back soon – maybe for their Brunch Buffet on the first and third Sundays of the month. Definitely worth expanding our footprint to try something new. If you aren’t familiar with all the menu items you can keep it simple but this is a place where adventure is likely more rewarded than not. If you don’t recognize something ask your server – they were extremely friendly and helpful.
