so•ca – cocina latina

With a message on Twitter that says, Shhh we’re open (finally) so•ca opened its doors to the public on Thursday night. so•ca is located in Cameron Village in the old Faire location.

I got to sit down with Sean Degnan, co-owner to chat with him about his newest venture. You may recognize the name as he is the co-owner of bu•ku which is known for its global street food.

I asked him to describe the restaurant to me. If you want the short version he says it is like a Latin bu•ku. The concept is celebrating underrepresented foods from South America. You won’t find tacos or enchiladas on the menu but you will find things like a Puerto Rican Crab Mofongo (crab, pork sausage, plantains, cracklins pickled onions and golden raisins) and a Yucatan Pozole Verde (pork belly, hominy, tomatillos, farmers cheese, chicharrones, and pork shoulder). Yum!

There are small plates that are meant to be shared and entrees for those who are looking for something a little bit more substantial. The restaurant is meant to be a place where you can come celebrate.

I asked him about his favorite menu item right now and he said he really likes the Jerk Duck. It is a crisp duck breast, jerked leg confit, coconut peas and rice, pickled cabbage and sour mango aioli. Sounds amazing.

I asked him what he was most excited about the restaurant and he said it is great to do it all over again. It’s something new and exciting. After visiting the space, I can see why he is excited – it is a great space.

Here are a few things to know before you go:

  • They are only open for dinner now.
  • You can make reservations on their website before heading out to dinner.
  • They also have complimentary valet so don’t let parking be a challenge.
