Paella – Key Largo, FL

So after a long day of diving we went as a group to eat Paella – what is paella you ask?

Paella is a Valencian rice dish that originated in its modern form in the mid-19th century near lake Albufera, a lagoon in Valencia, on the east coast of Spain. Many non-Spaniards view paella as Spain’s national dish, but most Spaniards consider it to be a regional Valencian dish. Valencians, in turn, regard paella as one of their identifying symbols. [Thanks Wikipedia]

That definition doesn’t say much about what we actually ate.  It was a rice based dish that had chicken, sausage, onions  and a lot of different types of seafood. It was really good and definitely worth the wait.  It was cooked in what one has to assume is a fairly “traditional” manner – over an open fire.

Given the manner in which it was cooked I think it is entirely appropriate for the canoe trip.  We have a fire. We have chicken. We have a river full of seafood. Nick – get us a pan and we’ll make the official dish of Valencia. OLE!

Nick – get to work.
