Tony’s Chocolonely and Ben & Jerry’s: Combining Forces for Slave-Free Chocolate!
Tony’s Chocolonely, a Dutch chocolate maker, and Ben & Jerry’s, an American ice cream maker, have joined forces to create a range of ice cream flavors featuring Tony’s slave-free chocolate. The two companies share a commitment to social and environmental responsibility, and their collaboration is designed to raise awareness about the chocolate industry’s ongoing struggles with forced labor and exploitation.
Tony’s Chocolonely was founded in 2005 by Dutch journalist Teun van de Keuken, who had learned about the chocolate industry’s use of forced labor and child slavery. Determined to create a more ethical and sustainable supply chain, he created Tony’s Chocolonely, which uses 100% slave-free chocolate and works directly with cocoa farmers to ensure fair prices and safe working conditions.
Ben & Jerry’s, meanwhile, has a long history of social and environmental activism. The company has a dedicated social mission team and uses sustainably sourced ingredients in all of its ice cream products.
The two companies came together to create a range of chocolate-based ice cream flavors that highlight Tony’s Chocolonely’s commitment to slave-free chocolate. The flavors, which include Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Chocolate Caramel Cluster, were developed with Tony’s chocolate inclusions and are available in pints at Ben & Jerry’s Scoop Shops and in grocery stores across the United States.
In addition to their collaboration, Tony’s Chocolonely and Ben & Jerry’s also co-hosted a virtual event called the Chocolate Love A-Fair. The event was designed to raise awareness about the chocolate industry’s struggles with forced labor and exploitation and to encourage consumers to demand more ethical and sustainable practices from chocolate makers.
Through their collaboration, Tony’s Chocolonely and Ben & Jerry’s are working to create a more just and equitable chocolate industry, one that respects the human rights of everyone involved in the supply chain. By supporting companies like Tony’s and Ben & Jerry’s, consumers can make a difference and help ensure that the chocolate products they enjoy are produced in a way that is ethical, sustainable, and free from exploitation.
