Today, during Wizard World in Raleigh I got a chance to sit down and chat with Lowell Dean, a Canadian filmmaker about his project, WolfCop. WolfCop was just released in the United States this week. You can view the trailer here.
WolfCop Synopsis: It’s not unusual for alcoholic cop Lou Garou to black out and wake up in unfamiliar surroundings, but lately things have taken a strange turn. Crime scenes seem oddly familiar. Lou’s senses are heightened, and when the full moon is out, he’s a rage-fueled werewolf. WOLFCOP is one cop’s quest to become a better man…one transformation at a time.
Tell me what the concept was for Wolf Cop.
“The concept behind Wolf Cop was wanting to make the type of movie I wanted to see, a really fun horror film. I always wanted to be a writer/director and I think horror fans are the best fans. I thought it would be a good way to start, making a good horror film. I was obsessed with things like vampires and zombies but I felt like the werewolf had been a bit overlooked lately and I thought let’s make a cool kick-ass werewolf movie.”
Why are horror fans the best type of fan?
“I feel like for some reason they are very passionate and they are very supportive and they understand what you are trying to do. Horror films often don’t have a huge budget or stars in them but people still weirdly get behind them with the same kind of love and passion you might see behind a Spiderman Movie.”
How do you get started making a movie like this?
“WolfCop has a very unique story from its idea to final film. We created a concept trailer for the first step with no money and 40 of my closest friends. We thought let’s just shoot something that shows the tone of the movie we would like to make. We shot the trailer and then we thought lets go look for rich people who would like to finance. Why we were looking we came across a website where anyone could enter their idea and people would vote on social media and after 3 months WolfCop was selected. They financed it for a million dollars and provided it the opportunity to be in theaters which is really rare for a Canadian Film. It was like a dream come true. Not only did we get to make our little movie but people got to see it in the theater throughout Canada.”
The transformation of the werewolf seemed to be different. Was this intentional? Why the change?
“For our transformation, I sat down with the effects artist before there was even a script. Werewolf movies are judged by their transformations and they live or die by their transformations so it has to be good. Emerson wanted it to be painful. There is something so horrific about it.”
Did you write yourself into the film anywhere?
“Maybe just the personality of the film and the tone. I don’t want the tone to be easily classified. I wanted parts of it to feel like a drama. I wanted to do a lot of everything. I like when movies meet lots of genre criteria. You can have the grossest thing you have ever seen and then hopefully a romantic love scene.”
So is there a WolfCop 2?
“Yes! It is happening. I have already written it and the producers are lining up the financing and figuring out when and where we will shoot. I wouldn’t be surprised if we shoot it this summer. If all goes well it could be out the end of this year.”
Can you give up any goods about WolfCop 2?
“I can’t say too much but I can say, it will be better and bigger budget. With the WolfCop it is kind of an origin story. The second one will be far more of an action movie and far more twisted. Without saying too much, WolfCop will meet his match. There will be an enemy that could basically destroy him. That is all I can say.”
We will just have to see! I hope that WolfCop will not be destroyed so there can be a WolfCop 3. It was a pleasure speaking with Lowell today and learning more about the movie.
