I walked into this movie with shall we call them reasonable expectations. I was fairly certain this movie didn’t tie into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in any significant way and while I was excited about a new solo Avenger movie I didn’t expect it to bring a lot to the table. I had hoped for an entertaining summer movie and Black Widow definitely checks that box.
This is a great movie with a complete story that doesn’t depend too much on knowing the characters on their elaborate history so far. Whether this is your first movie in the MCU or you are more than 20 in you’ll enjoy this offering. The movie takes place between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. And while we see Natasha as a child it isn’t quite the origin story that I thought it might be.
On a completely different note, it was awesome to watch a movie in a theater. Yes – we were the only ones there but the lack of distractions from cell phones, computers, or a tiny human was great and really added to the experience. And yes – I know it was available on Disney+ but this was made for the big screen and I just don’t think every movie can be appreciated on even the best home set up the way it can in a real theater. If you feel uncomfortable going to a movie look for times when it is playing during the week. We had the entire theater to ourselves and it was great.
