They could still be here—the 1,412 human beings killed last year on North Carolina roads. On the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, a pair of shoes, still, empty, stand for each one. To honor them, and to expose the dire cost of unsafe driving, NC Vision Zero will host the annual memorial display at the North Carolina State Capitol Building.

We stopped by to take a few pictures of this impressive display encouraging people to pledge to wear their seat belt, follow the speed limit, only drive sober and alert and to keep their eyes on the road, hands on the wheel and mind on driving. (Take the pledge here.)

The goal of this program is to reduce traffic death in North Carolina and have a day with zero deaths on our roadways. The shoes offer a powerful visual image of how many lives are lost each year in traffic accidents.
